11 Best AI SEO Tools, Ranked by What You Actually Pay

← All posts
TL;DR
  • Pay for one job at a time: research, writing, tracking or links.
  • Compare the month-to-month price. Yearly prices are often charged upfront.
  • Older roundups go stale fast. Surfer, Frase and Semrush have all reworked their plans in 2026.

The best AI SEO tools for most founders are a cheap research tool plus one content tool, not a big suite. Ahrefs Starter and Frase Starter together cost $78 a month. This list ranks 11 tools by real monthly cost, with a checked date on every price.

Can AI SEO tools hurt your traffic?

Yes, if you publish volume without adding anything. Google says AI helps with research and structure, but mass-generating pages with no added value may break its scaled content abuse policy. Google also made clear in May 2026 that its spam policies cover AI Overviews and AI Mode.

ClickUp's blog is the example people cite. Kamila Olexa's analysis of Ahrefs estimates shows it falling from 1.19M monthly visits in January 2025 to 28,790 in April 2026. She blames templated, self-promotional pages and a response that added 2,815 more posts, rather than one update. The lesson is about the pages, not the tool that wrote them.

How do the best AI SEO tools compare on price?

"Real monthly cost" is the price if you pay month to month. Where only a yearly price is public, the table says so.

1. MarketMuse

MarketMuse shows which topics to cover and where your coverage is thin. The free plan gives one user 10 queries a month, with no site inventory and no briefs. Paid plans are quote-based. CostBench lists Optimize at $99, but the vendor page shows no price.

2. NeuronWriter

This is the cheapest paid content scorer here. Bronze includes 2 projects, 25 analyses and 15,000 AI credits. It suits one person optimizing a few posts a week. It won't replace keyword or backlink data.

3. Ahrefs

Use it to pick topics before you write. Starter caps you at 200 credits a month, and it renews monthly only. AI prompt tracking starts on Lite, which costs $129. Ahrefs says it never runs discounts, and points site owners to Ahrefs Free as the way in.

4. Frase

Frase turns search results into briefs and drafts, and adds AI visibility tracking. Starter covers one seat, one site, 10 articles and 50 prompts across ChatGPT and Google AI. Starter has no overage billing, so you wait for the reset or upgrade.

5. Surfer

Surfer scores drafts against pages that already rank. The Essential and Scale plans were retired in May 2026, so ignore any review that quotes them. Yearly plans give the year's documents upfront: 120 on Discovery and 360 on Standard. Discovery tracks no AI prompts, while Standard tracks 25 with a weekly refresh.

6. Writesonic

Writesonic has moved from AI writer to AI visibility platform. Starter includes 50 prompts, 15 AI articles and 10 site audits for one user. The Action Center starts on Growth at $399 billed yearly. If you only want writing help, this is a lot to pay.

7. Byword

Byword goes from a keyword list to finished articles with little handling. New accounts get 5 free articles, and Starter charges $3.50 per extra article. It's the fastest option here and the riskiest if nobody reads the output.

8. Cuppa

Cuppa suits bulk pages if you're comfortable with API keys. Every plan needs your own keys, and payments aren't refundable after the 7-day trial. Its docs estimate $0.02 to $0.30 of AI cost for a 2,000-word article, depending on the model. The old Hobby plan is now listed as legacy.

9. Clearscope

Clearscope is for teams that grade every piece before publishing. Essentials includes 50 tracked queries, 50 pages, 20 Discoveries and 20 drafts. Plans include unlimited users, which helps a team more than a solo founder.

10. Semrush

Semrush makes sense if you want one vendor. The $139.95 SEO plan excludes AI features, and Starter at $199 bundles them with 50 daily prompts. The free plan allows 10 reports a day and excludes AI Visibility. Content Base adds $60 a month.

11. Backlinker AI

Backlinker sends AI-written pitches to journalist request platforms. The plan covers one site and 150+ monthly pitches, with a refund if you get fewer than 3 links from DR 30+ sites. DR is an Ahrefs score, not a measure of relevance, so check where the links land.

How was this list built?

This is desk research, not a hands-on test. Tools made the list if they do a distinct job and publish enough to price them. Each was compared on month-to-month cost, plan limits, what the entry plan leaves out and the cheapest honest way to try it.

What do most AI SEO tool lists leave out?

  • Yearly pricing isn't monthly pricing. Frase Starter at $39 means paying $468 upfront. Cuppa Solo means $1,188.
  • Entry plans often exclude the feature you came for. Surfer Discovery, the Semrush SEO plan and Ahrefs Starter all leave out AI prompt tracking.
  • A general AI assistant covers a lot. If you already pay for ChatGPT or Claude, use it for outlines and drafts first. Buy a tool when you need live data or tracking.
  • Fact-checking is still your job. Google says to review AI content manually before publishing, including titles and meta descriptions.

Common questions

Can content from AI SEO tools rank on Google?

Yes, if it's useful and accurate. Google's warning targets pages generated at scale without added value. The tool matters less than the editing.

What is the cheapest useful setup?

Start free with Ahrefs Free and MarketMuse Free. When you need more, $78 a month covers keyword data, briefs and basic AI tracking.

Can I just use ChatGPT or Claude instead?

For drafts and outlines, often yes. They won't give you tracked rankings, backlink data or a record of AI citations.

Can AI build backlinks on autopilot?

It can automate pitching, but editors still decide what gets published. Read any guarantee's refund terms before paying.

Do I need a separate AEO tool?

Not at first. Frase, Writesonic, Surfer Standard and Semrush Starter all include some AI tracking. Run this AEO audit first to see if tracking is your real gap.

Should I buy one tool or several?

Start with one job. Add a second tool when you hit a real limit, not because a list says you need a full stack.

What should you do first?

List the one job you're stuck on, then start the free plan or trial for that job. Open the pricing page before you buy, because plan names and limits on this list may have changed since the date shown.
